They didn’t find shelter before becoming soaked through. Socks squishing in her shoes, she stumbled along behind Finn until they reached a collection of rocks that were bent like a wave, creating a protective ceiling for them to duck under.

Shivering, she pressed herself close to Ceera, who was whimpering while she slept. Finn’s arm was long enough to wrap around Ceera and reach to Lexil, and she savoured its warmth. Though her muscles were cramped by the small space, it was nothing new to her. Her body had resembled an unoiled machine for days.

As the rain fell, falling first in sheets and then slowing to a light trickle, they sat in silence. Once the rain stopped completely, they remained pressed together, seeking heat. She could feel Ceera shivering. Finn too. With night approaching swiftly, she worried how they’d manage in the night air.

Teeth chattering, she asked, “Can we build a fire?”

“Do you see any kindling around?” Finn responded.

“I—”

“Never mind.” Plucking a pebble from between his booted feet, he tossed it into the nearest puddle. “There wouldn’t be any dry wood anyway.”

“Oh.” She should have realized that.

“And we don’t want to attract attention. A fire at night? The light would be visible for miles.”

Feeling stupid, she mumbled, “Right.”

Another small rock went sailing out of their alcove, followed by a curse word.

“Finn?”

He mumbled something.

“Finn?” she repeated.

“This wasn’t how it was supposed to be.”

She waited for a beat before saying, “Sorry?”

“I was supposed to be better planned. Have better equipment.” He glanced her way. “Leave in spring, not fall.”

She tucked her lower lip between her front teeth.

“We might starve out here.”

“We won’t,” she rushed to assure him.

“Really?” he snarled. “Do you know how to find edible plants? Build snares?”

She swallowed. “No.” The word came out as a whisper.

He grunted.

“We had to go. We had to save Ceera.”

“We?” His eyebrows lifted. “You weren’t going to come. Kita made you. You were going to send me off with Ceera, alone.”

Jaw clenching, she asked, “Would you ever have left the plantation if I hadn’t made you?”

He visibly flinched, then scooted forward, easing his grip away from their shoulders. Once he was clear of the ledge, he stood and started walking away.

“Where are you going?” she called.

He didn’t answer. He didn’t stop. He didn’t turn around.

Untangling herself from Ceera, she ducked underneath the overhang and straightened. “Finn!”

Still no response.

“Finn, come back!”

He went beyond her sight.

She sank to her knees, landing in a puddle, the sensation barely registering.

“Lex?”

She straightened immediately, removing herself out of the puddle. Retreating to the protective nook, she gave Ceera a brief hug. “What is it?”

“Where’d Finn go?”

She thought quickly. “He’s looking around. Seeing which way we should go next.”

“That’s a good idea.”

Fingering her bracelet, twisting it around and around her wrist, she replied, “Yes. It is.”
